  • The Gate of the Year
    Minnie Louise Haskins, 1908

I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year,
"Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown."

And he replied, "Go into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God.
That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way!"

So I went forth and finding the Hand of God
    Trod gladly into the night.
He led me towards the hills
And the breaking of day in the lone east.

    So heart be still!
What need our human life to know
    If God hath comprehension?

In all the dizzy strife of things
    Both high and low,
    God hideth his intention.

  • A New Year

Today is the first day of a new year. Last night we watched the Broncos end their hopes of post-season. This morning I awoke to the news of CB Darrent Williams' shooting death. I have friends who are out of jobs and feeling discouraged. I don't mean to sound so gloomy, but life is not always bright and shiny. Another football season will likely replace the memory of this one, but a 24-year-old athlete will not be replaced in the hearts and lives of his family, friends, and teammates. Jobs may come but may also move families away. I so long to be hopeful...to see God in everything.

  • Merry Christmas from the Propps

We wanted to wish you all a wonderful Christmas.

Yes, our boys are really that big. Christopher will be 18 in February and is in his senior year at WCHS. He has decided on Tri-State University in Angola to pursue mechanical engineering. We are so proud of him. He has received several large academic scholarships from the university alone.

Matthew is 15 and a freshman at WCHS. He is our more typical high schooler, but that also fits more with his personality. He's still a good kid and a good student. We haven't seemed to curb his interest in fireworks and such. Ty said he can't make anything until he's had chemistry.

Emily, 12, is nearly halfway through her final elementary year. Working in the building with her helps me recall so much about her years from kindergarten to the present. Where did the time go? She, too, is an excellent student. (We have been blessed.)

With Christmas on the horizon, we've talked about material things with our kids. Matthew summed it up best when he said that he used to look forward to getting more "stuff," but now it doesn't hold the same excitement for him. I think more and more we are all realizing the truth in this C.S. Lewis quote: "If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world."

While we are here, may we love well and then long well for that better day that awaits us.

About Me

  • Two of us were born in California, two in Colorado, and one in Illinois. Although we are not native Hoosiers, we sure like living in our little Indiana town. However, if anyone wants to move in a few mountains, we would not object.
